In partnership with IfOnly, we developed a custom made gift box exclusively designed as a token of appreciation to American Airlines Concierge Key loyal members.
Inspired by the tales of aviation's golden era, the curated gift included a collectible travel guidebook, a box of 21 chocolate pieces crafted by the award-winning chocolatier Jean-Marie Auboine and a collection of 21 printed postcards each with images of American Airlines vintage travel posters. This exclusive gift box is a tribute to the elegance of travel, and an ode to the nostalgia of aviation.
I had the privilege to design the full experience from beginning to end with the collaboration of Jean-Marie Auboine's team and direction of IfOnly and American Airlines.
The book's creative concept was inspired by American Airlines destination vintage travel posters. We made a selection of 21 posters with destinations from around the world throughout four decades from the 1940's to 1970's. It's an art book that also serves as a travel guide featuring what to see, eat and do at each destination.
The book includes all full-color reprints of these rare and limited-edition creations. In crafting this book my creative direction was inspired by the nostalgia of the vibrant color palettes and the retro typography. My vision was to pay an homage to the design trends of that era, the artists and their styles.
Color was a focal point for the creative direction of the book. Each decade was color-coded to visually categorize them and to easily find your way through each decade from the fore-edge of the closed book. The use of iconography was applied for the travel guide section and the historic/fun fact timelines.
And to complete this voyage of the senses, a collection of postcards designed with the very same vintage travel posters that inspired the gift box. These printed postcards are for sharing the magic of travel with loved ones or simply serve as a cherished keepsake or a collectible item.
The history of flight may be well documented, but it’s never been told through chocolate. The collection of gourmet chocolates were hand-crafted with flavors inspired by American Airlines world destinations.
Each of the 21 chocolate pieces were inspired by American Airlines vintage travel posters, from New York to Australia to Curacao.
For the design of each piece, I carefully crafted it to preserve the essence and artistry of each poster. To achieve this, I zoomed in on specific areas of the posters and vectorized them to be printed on top of each chocolate. The collective view of the chocolates placed inside the box was designed to be a beautiful and colorful work of art.
American Airlines wanted to give recognition to their loyal Barclay's and Citi credit card holders. The special gift boxes included treats, such as a bag of custom blend Mexican organic coffee and a can of artisan drinking chocolate chai.
I custom designed the packaging of the coffee bag and was inspired by the American Airlines vintage poster of Mexico, which is also the origin of the product.
For the drinking chocolate mix wraparound label, I created a colorful collage of all 21 posters featured in the book.
This project was by far one of my favorites. It was a fusion of many of my favorite things: art and design, retro aesthetics, coffee and of course a lot of chocolate.
